Microsoft originally created Cortana to work with Edge and collect serch results from bing and it has been going on as planned until some Windows users found a way to make Cortana launch searches through third party apps like chrome and Firefox which could eventually bring search results from google.
unfortunately for users, Microsoft wasn't too pleased with this craftiness, so they decided to lock the voice assistant "Cortana" to Edge, which means Cortana will from now on use only Edge browser unlike before when it supported third party browsers.
as Microsoft said, using third party browsers could limit Cortana's efficiency because it depends on bing and edge to function properly and efficiently.
however Microsoft also stated that this only applies to Cortana and if you still want to use chrome or Firefox as your default browser you can go ahead but Cortana will only use edge browser.
