He was nearly hit by the oncoming vehicle when he subconsciously ran out from a cyber cafe and head straight to one of the busy roads in his community. That was Ratpull who couldn’t contain his joy after checking his admission status, He saw: ‘you have been offered admission to study Medicine in the Unipet’ which happened to be one of the best Universities in his country. His happiness was laced by the fact that he finally broke the trappings of myth in his community where nobody had ever gained admission into university. Little did he know that the admission letter he claimed to have printed was his letter of destruction. Ratpull was just 16 when he faced the shock of his life, he was fazed and disconcerted by what was called a counsel he received on his first day on campus. Ratpull and Catpush were intimate friends from the same village whose success could be guaranteed by their parent for their hardworking. What a strange combination! Doesn’t it sound paradoxically? Rat befriending Cat but let learn from their story.
The duo joined hundreds of student happily on the day of resumption. As expected, they were fully loaded with food, money and other necessity for successful stays on campus. ‘Good morning Ratpull‘ said Gongo. Gongo was a part four student in the department of marriage and counselling who in his attempt to prepare himself for the life after school, he had printed a pamphlet which contained words of advice for the fresh blood on campus. As he was handling the leaflet to Ratpull, he said, ‘ this is an antidote to all problem you may encounter on this campus, if you can read, assimilate and make use of it, I bet your success here.’ Anxiously, he glanced through it to know what it contained.’ So it is true? That was his response after seen the topic sentence.
Ratpull had been disconcerted by the topic of discussion stated in the leaflet. What was the headline? How powerful was the word that instilled a strange feeling in a smart kid like Ratpull? Though, that was not the first time he would hear the word but he was only disturbed by the emphasis people had been laying on the word. He regretted choosing Unipet, so if he had known, he would have yielded to his father’s advice that he should not chose Unipet, but his dream for the University made all his father’s effort unfruitful. The Gongo’s letter which was supposed to be constructive advice had turned out to be a destructive one for a reason *. Hmmm! here is the word that upset the apple cart: “Welcome to Unipet, a prestigious University where people read to score ‘F’”.
Believe me, this statement looks rather simple but it has destroyed some people’s life due to their shallow level of thinking. Pathetically, the advice had made Ratpull to be swimming in the ocean of fear since that day. Honestly, Ratpull read a lot but he failed to understand because he read under pressure and that made him not to concentrate.
In his attempt to suppress his worries, he was introduced to hard drug. He found happiness in the bottle and free from the sense of inadequacy. Little did he know that taking hard drug will only suppress his feelings but will not give a lasting solution to his problem. Finally, he was withdrawn from the University for failing all the courses he offered.
What is the moral of this story? Though Ratpull knew the cause of his problem (fear) but he failed to address it. Fear is an emotion controlled by a particular part of the brain for you to study, understand and make a sensible decision of any situation in your environment. Emotion is the outcome of thought. Emotion is neither positive nor negative but thought is. Don’t let your emotion controls you but rather control your emotion by controlling your thought. Any moment your emotion controls you, the outcome is mostly innocuous. When your desire for intimacy controls you, won’t you commit fornication? When Ratpull was piloted by fear, what was the outcome? Fear can make you to lose the power of concentration which without it, success cannot be guaranteed. It is a common norm in our society that alcohol suppresses fear, Nicotine suppresses anger, Marijuana suppresses sadness and they all bring pleasure according to the belief of most people. But remember that pleasure hide your weak point. Suppressing your emotion is not the solution to your problem. Though Ratpull knew the cause of his problem (fear) but instead of facing his emotion, he suppressed it by taking hard drug which eventually lead him to where he wasn’t expecting.
Juxtapositionally, Ratpull and Catpush where both integrated into the same environment but Catpush was able to differentiate himself by exploiting what stood between Ratpull and his success and that made him to succeed.
I am using this piece to welcome fresh blood into the serene atmosphere of Oba Awon University (OAU) that you should endeavour to have a constructive thought about OAU and not a destructive one. Irrespective of what you might have heard about OAU, you should not be discouraged. Remember that students are still graduating with first class honour here. Believe me nothing is immposible.
