The Argentine star was cut to have elbowed Winston Reid during his side's 3-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium last week Sunday.
The 28-year-old, who was charged for violent conduct had his appeal rejected and has been banned for three matches which will include the Manchester derby on Saturday.
The former Atletico Madrid man will also miss the
EFL Cup third-round tie against Swansea at the Liberty Stadium on September 21 but he will be free to make his return from suspension away at Swansea in the Premier League three days later.
